      In Another Country. Ernest Hemingway started his career as a writer in a newspaper office in Kansas City. He became a volunteer ambulance driver during World War I where he was wounded; he spent a considerable amount of time in hospitals. During the twenties, Hemingway became an expatriate which he describes in his first book, The Sun Also Rises.
